Hospitals in Days

The outbreak of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) in China has been in the news and so too has the building of hospitals. The lack of facilities to treat and quarantine patients, especially at the loci in Wuhan, caused the Chinese government to implement emergency plans with the result that it rushed the building of two new hospitals in Wuhan as special emergency facilities.

The building of Wuhan Leishenshan Hospital and Wuhan Huoshenshan Hospital was an emergency measure taken by Wuhan municipal authorities to resolve the insufficiency of the city’s medical resources.

The Wuhan Huoshenshan Hospital, covering 25,000 sq. meters with 700-1,000 beds, was launched on January 24 and was completed on February 3. The construction of Wuhan Leishenshan Hospital, started on January 26, was completed on February 6 and opened for patients on February 8. The 1,300-bed hospital is a field hospital-based building with modular design. It has 32 zones for patients, two of which are for those in critical condition and three for those with serious symptoms, and covers an area of over 30,000 sq. meters.

On January 27, Premier Li Keqiang visited the construction site for Wuhan Huoshenshan Hospital and stressed the importance of ensuring the quality of the project while pursuing construction speed, saying that the newly built medical facilities must function well in curbing the spread of the outbreak. Many Chinese companies worked around the clock at the construction sites to ensure the timely and qualified completion of the medical facilities.

Beijing GeoEnviron Engineering & Technology, an environmental remediation and provider of pollution control and waste treatment systems, and Oriental Yuhong Waterproof Technology, the largest waterproofing system provider in Asia, are among the companies that contributed to the construction of the two hospitals.

BGE engineered 35,000 sq. meters of anti-seepage construction in the Huoshenshan Hospital project. With the participation of more than 50 staff, BGE also provides solutions for the designing of the sewage treatment project and the medical waste disposal project. Meanwhile, Oriental Yuhong engaged in the waterproof construction and overall coordination with government agencies and departments to ensure the supply of advanced materials.
