Academy of Self-Reliance

Cottage Industries

cottage industries | noun

  1. the production, for sale, of goods at home, as the making of handicrafts by rural families.
  2. any small-scale, loosely organized industry.

More and more individuals are working from home, either for an employer or for themselves. Working for one’s self can be highly rewarding or highly frustrating and very costly. The key to success is in the planning and planning begins with knowing why you want to have a cottage industry. The reason for doing something often, if not always impacts the outcomes. Here are some valid reasons taken from a self-reliance workshop sponsored by a non-profit organization for starting or growing your own business:

  • Ownership
  • Additional income
  • Personal passion
  • Second career
  • Challenge of the experience
  • Necessity (lack of employment opportunities)
  • Personal freedom & control
  • Greater financial security

Once a person understands why he or she may want or need to start or grow a business, they need to assess their personal readiness to do so.
