Letter From The Director

Human intelligence is a divine gift that allows an individual to learn more, to do more, to be more, enabling him or her to change their environment and state of being. That ability is truly a remarkable and wonderful gift. A defining moment in life is when we determine what is wanted and why. These two things can become a driving force. At the Academy of Self-Reliance, we bring two important tools to the equation for achieving what is wanted.

 

The first tool is a methodology for creating and implementing a plan to achieve self-reliance. It is called the PIER method, where you Plan and Implement first on paper, then Evaluate the plan, making whatever changes are needed for a successful outcome, and finally Reimplement the plan. This process is repeated until every needful thing is prepared.

 

The second tool is strategy. Strategy is important because our resources are usually limited. By utilizing strategies that maximize our resources, we are able do more with less. In addition, using cooperative strategies while working with other like-minded individuals and families is probably one of the most powerful tools we have as mankind.

 

At the Academy of Self Reliance, we incorporate both the PIER methodology and various strategies to help families achieve self-reliance. This is not only our goal, but our passion. We continue to welcome our newest members to The Path, joining with us in breaking the chains of dependency found in much of modern society through knowledge, the skill to use that knowledge, and the wisdom to know when. We invite all to consider the freedom and safety found with self-reliance.

Mesquite trees are power houses.

They can be used for much more than firewood.
 
Mesquite trees have long been used by native people of the southwest for food, medicine, beverages, glue, hair dye, firewood, construction material, and furniture making.
Their seeds (aka beans) contain approximately:

   • 35% protein – way more than soybeans

   • 25% fiber

   • Glycemic index of 25 which help regulate blood sugar

   • Require little water

   • Most have thorns (OUCH), that can be used as a barrier

From his daughter, Sarah: “My dad is the first person to be at an event, and the last to leave, to help with setting up chairs, taking them down, and any other service he can provide. He loves helping people but prefers to do so in the background, behind the scenes so to speak. Praise and recognition make him uncomfortable, which is why we didn’t ask his permission to spotlight him in today’s newsletter. I’ll ask his forgiveness later. ;)
 
Dad has been a computer whiz for as long as I’ve known him (let’s pretend that’s been 29 yrs *cough*), and his abilities to navigate a software program and html code are borderline magical. His ideas are pretty much pure genius, and many times he’s thought of things years before anyone else does, including major companies. Most of the Academy of Self-Reliance website wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for his talents and willingness to sacrifice his time. And sleep. But as much as he loves computers, html code, and setting up chairs, he loves 2 things even more: His family and The Lord. He always puts those two things first. Always. He’s married to the love of his life, Jenny, and has 5 (incredibly awesome, if I may say so myself) children. He has always strived to make the gospel an important part of our home. I have seen The Lord pour out blessings because of his faithfulness, and service to his family. And his desire to be a better person and efforts to grow closer to The Savior every day are some of the many reasons why he is my hero. It has been a wonderful experience working with him (ok, more like watching him work his magic and then giving him the thumbs up in moral support). I’m just amazed at what he has done, and the time he has done it in. 
 
If you haven’t met him in person yet, I hope you get to someday. My life is definitely richer because he’s in it.”
