Trees are the amazing handy work of our Creator. They bless our lives in so many ways. They contribute the fresh air we breathe. They provide shelter from the winds and harsh elements of nature, cool shade in the hot summer, fuel for heat in the cold winter. They provide fruits and nuts of every kind. Their by-products range from paper to paint. Their contributions to our lives are vast and diverse. It is for these reasons and more that it is wisdom on our part to learn about them and how we can increase their presence in our lives.
Granja Porcon in Peru is an agricultural cooperative that began in 1975 that started with just 7 individuals and now their member's numbers in the thousands. The valley where this project began had very few trees with only a couple of small streams. It was like much of land found here in Utah. One of the very first things these new inhabitants set out to do was plant trees. In a 30-year period, they planted over 10,000,000 trees. Now they not only have a thriving lumber industry, with the planting of so many trees they have moderated the climate and increased the rainfall. That which was barren is now green and full of life. With the advent of a new year, it is my hope and prayer that each one of us will take time to imagine the possibilities that lay before us. Then with hope and courage plow the furrows, plant the seeds and nurture the crops that will change the future for the better. All this because we took time to see that which was good, and to cultivate and nurture it, thus producing an environment that heals both the spirit and the body. Today is a good day to embark on our own Granja Porcon.
God bless and Godspeed,
