Letter From The Director

Years ago, our Scout Troop had a Special Forces Survival Instructor come and teach “Being Prepared.” His opening comments have stayed with me ever since. He said, “I and those that are with me will survive barring serious injury, because of three things: my attitude, my knowledge and my ability to reason.” He then reiterated, “My attitude is that I am going to survive, I have knowledge because of my training, and I have the skill to reason my way out of a difficult situation.”

Those three attributes will serve us well in everyday life. Knowing what is wanted is critical. Then, acquiring the knowledge and skills needed to bring about what is wanted is next. The third, the ability to reason, in and of itself, is a powerful tool. When you add the reasoning capacity of 8 to 10 other like-minded individuals found in a focus group, we become unstoppable.

The information and resources provided by the Academy courses are necessary for becoming self-reliant. The focus groups with their facilitator is, in my opinion, the most powerful learning aid we offer. Combining the decades of experience that each individual of a focus group has, along with implementing The Path process of planning, assessing and implementing offers solutions to challenging situations that could halt one on their path to self-reliance.

We encourage each participant to follow The Path, completing each assignment, and preparing to actively participate in their focus group when they are invited to join.  In addition, we encourage everyone to invite other like-minded individuals and families to join with us on the path to self-reliance.

God speed,

Philip Gleason

Director

You can't go more than a week without water.

A person can live without food for about a month, but only about a week without water.

If the amount of water in your body is reduced by just 1%, you’ll feel thirsty.
If it’s reduced by 10%, you’ll die.

An average sized man needs 15.5 cups or 124 oz. of water a day and an average sized woman needs 11.5 cups or 92 oz. a day, as per the Mayo Clinic.

SHANNON BROOKS - EARTHEN BUILDING TECHNOLOGY SPECIALIST

Shannon Brooks is the president of Monticello College, a unique school that combines georgics, the liberal arts, manual arts, and entrepreneurship resulting in debt-free, mortgage-free, self-reliant graduates. He is the author of The State of American Education and A Thomas Jefferson Education for Teens.

Dr. Brooks is a veteran of military service in the United States Submarine Fleet and holds a Bachelor’s degree in business administration, a Master’s degree in education, and a Ph.D. in constitutional law. On a personal note, he loves operating his backhoe, hiking, and the renewing force of permaculture.

The 1st two decades of the 21st century have seen an interesting collaboration between high tech and ancient wisdom. We are seeing this in the fields of health and wellness, education, and energy.

In the world of building construction is quickly moving from industrial to green to regenerative. As concerns over carbon foot print, pollution, and industrial practices increase, there is new appreciation for ancient technologies, leading to local and lowers cost materials, domestic toxicity awareness, passive heating, and natural cooling.

Earthen building is a technology that dates back to the walls of Jericho thousands of years ago. CEB (compressed earth blocks) is merging the best of the past and the future.

Dr. Brooks will be presenting Earthen Building techniques in one of the Academy’s up and coming webinar sessions. We look forward to his presentation.
